Well i bought the limited edition box, which is cool!
But the package is much sweeter than the film to be honest.
First of all the movie runs in about 2 hours, but nothing really happens story wise! Alot of fighting and running and pretty pictures, but it soooo lacks a story! The story is about a girl who makes a promise to spirit/godess what ever, that she will never hunger again but will in exchange never have love in her life. 20 years later, she gets rescued by a general, or so she thinks, it is really his slave who has donned the genrals armour to save the king, but the slave is not th brightest being on this earth, so he mistakenly kills the king (he does not know how the king looks, so the general tells him, that he is the only one in the palace who has no weapon, trouble is when the slave arrives, the king just so happens to have a sword and threatens his mistress. I guess something clicked in the slaves brain since he kills the king (hopefully not believing that the woman is the king, although that is never really clarified why he killed the king to save the woman-odd hmmm)
Back to the story. So the slave and the girl run away from the troops in the palace. But soon they caught at the edge of a waterfall, now the pursuer promises to let her live if the slave/general jumps over the edge, so the slave does that. But the slave survives! now returning to his general he tells him what has happened and so on. Well this is here the story starts to become really repetitious, alot of jail breaking and running and recapturing now happens for the next hour and a half.
Well see it for yourselves i cannot be bothered anymore with this incredibly paperthin plotline! The martial arts is primarily wires flung in the air! back and fourth. It is dazzling the first two or three times, but then it gets really old really fast! and you start thinking "oh boy here we go again!" that being said, it is not unintentionally funny, just plain not interesting - i would compare it with a kiddie fairytale, where we have some characters who are bad and then we have the good guys who suffer immensely till the very end.
Now for the box! it is really an impressive box, with posters and two extra films: emperor annd the assasin and Farewell My Concubine and some other goodies, all wrapped in a great red box. But but but!..
The movie itself has flaws! the dvd jitters while the camera pans, it is quite disturbing! the dts does not deliver any impact and did i mention that the picture jitters when the camera pans? (which it does almost every three minutes!)
All in all:
Film: 2 out of 5
the package: 4.5 out of 5
the quality of the movie/DVD: 2.5 out of 5
PS. if anyone wants to buy the box let me know!!!

Hehe, i see you finally got it; glad you like the package at least Smile

I find it surprising that Kaige Chen out of all people would produce a paper-thin plot. Usually his narrative is the strongest part of his movies. Maybe he just wanted to try something completely different? Anyway, as I'm not so much into fantasy anyway, I think i'll give this one a miss Razz

Reminds me of Hero a bit.

How are they?

The normal chinese DVD has two non skippable 3 minute adverts before the movie on each of the two discs.
There is also a 2 Disc HK edition in a limited and non limited version. I hope that edition has no faults.

How much? Smile

I'm afraid, there will be lots of other limited super versions around the globe, just like Hero and House of flying Daggers.

The movie will be released on the 27.04.06 in Germany if it doesn't get postponed like Seven Swords. You can also watch it on the Fantasy Filmfest Nights in March.

Hero was great, and so were Assasins and Concurbine. Cool

And c'mon, Hero had a cool, verry complex story, especially with all the sudden twists.

The movie is set for the Fantasy Filmfest fright night. (3 films per night for the price of two for 2 nights).

It replaced Slither / The Hills have Eyes. Confused

And, even worse, it's the same night as Silent Hill is playing!! Sad Evil or Very Mad

Which city are you talking about and where does it say that you get 3 for 2? I read that one film cost 7,50 Euro.

Fook, even if SH would be playing after a massive Jam-together 4 hour epic version of Argentos THE CARD DEALER and Britney Spears CROSSROADS I would go in just to watch it!!!

BTW, have you seen it yet??
The site, trailer, fook, EVERYTHING looks darn brilliant!! I'm jumping up and down that it isn't the usual "Ugh, let's do a cool popcorn flick out of the material!" film, but, from the material I've seen, the most griddy, horrifying and scary piece of raw meat to hit the screen as a film since JACOB'S LADDER. Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

I SO can't wait for it...

( have you yet checked the audio-section on the official website?? It's in CAST & CREW... that painting... Shocked )

I thought it was great, a highlight of the festival. Don't know what everyone dislikes about it. Fantastic pictures and a story which I found better than House of flying daggers.

the movie simply lacks any kind of depth, it is just fancy pictures, even house of daggers had more to offer!
