Hoping for some gritty dark film showing the tough streets of Mongkok, you get a pathetic drama, oozing with tragic people who are forced to live the lives of a prostitute or gun man to get by. It starts out nicely but soon it falls into the trap called dreariness, and the movie stops involving you and you just get bored watching people who cannot make up their minds and with and ending you know will happen, but hope it will not turn into that obvious and bleak direction, because it would further destroy the little plot the movie has, but it does....... save yourself the trouble and money and skip this film. _________________

I enjoyed One Night In Mongkok. I found it to be more character driven than narrative driven, and found a great deal of depth in those characters. The film had a great look, and the seedy underbelly of the society in which it was based really came across. At least to this viewer.
Understated would probably be a good description of One Night In Mongkok, and I suppose in many ways it was the antithesis of, say, Hard Boiled or The Killer. Perhaps in the same way something like The First Deadly Sin could have been like Dirty Harry or The French Connection, but ended up far more subdued and nauanced. |

i must admit that i do not agree with you at all. The movie was not more characterdriven than narrative. The characters were 2 dimensional and endded up being even more 2 dimensional in the end, and adding the ending, where he pays for his prior mistakes and she as well, only makes it even more unbelievable in the end. The photography was nice, but never visually stunning like PTU or Breaking News. It neither helped nor hurt the movie, the photography was just plain "bland" it is a movie without a message and by adding the caring hitman and the hurt hooker, just made it even more stereotypical. _________________
